White Pine Holiday News 2021
Greetings and Happy Holidays! Harvest is complete and wine fermentations are done. Now we are getting the wines settled for a long winter’s nap.
In the cellar the Reserve Reds and Chardonnay are in barrels while our crisp and refreshing whites and rose’s are in tanks. It was an interesting year that started dry and then got very wet at times from June through October. It was one of the warmest years on record with warm days and nights continuing well into October, a first for me after nearly 40 years making Michigan wine. We had an opportunity this year to purchase Pinot noir grapes. The fruit was beautiful and the wine is starting its journey through “elevage” the process of maturing or “elevating” from a coarse, green youth, to a full bodied, complex wine. We can hardly wait to share it with you at this time next year.
Our 2020 Reserve Reds will be bottled soon with Cabernet franc Sophie’s Vineyard and Teroldego to be released in early December. 2020 was a difficult year in many ways but the grapes were among the best ever! Warm, dry weather was the norm all summer and through September, leading to small berries and intense wines. We will also release our 2020 Chardonnay and our 2019 Merlot in December. Lots of new wines to try and you won’t want to miss them. They are extraordinary!
Frost has finally ended the growing season and the vines are settling in for a long winter’s rest. We will work on getting them pruned for spring when weather allows. Winter is also the season when winemaker’s rest and it is well deserved! We can enjoy the fruits of our labors and recharge for a while after a busy growing season and harvest.
Now that the holiday’s are here there are some great events to enjoy in and around St Joe. We look forward to seeing you in the tasting room and sharing the latest from our vineyard and cellar. The Downtown District means you can grab a glass of wine to go while you go about your shopping or enjoy an event.
